Soleckshaw in DelhiA refreshing change to Indian roads would be the Solar Rickshaw, if you live in the suburbs in Mumbai you would know what it feels like to be stuck in traffic with a hundred rickshaws exhausts spewing.

But Bombay is not yet lucky, as Delhi is the city where the, "Soleckshaw" has been introduced on a testing period. You may be familiar with Delhi's rickshaws powered by peddling.

The Soleckshaw has now provided an opportunity for the rickshaw drivers to relax for a while and earn some money. On a complete charge the solar rickshaw is capable of covering a minimum of 48 kilometers.Soleckshaw the solar rickshaw

But currently the rickshaws do not have their own solar panels, they can get their batteries recharged at solar charging stations for a small amount.

In places where the air is not clean to breath its a healthier option for the rickshaw drivers, perhaps a full fledged solar rickshaw will be a better replacement that the current petrol and CNG ones.

A solar rickshaw designAccording to one of the rickshaw drivers, "Earlier, when people hailed us it was like, 'Hey you rickshaw puller!' The police used to harass us, slapping fines even abusing us for what they called wrong parking. Now people look at me with respect."

All's well that ends well, hope the Soleckshaw is the start of a new beginning and soon we shall see a new breed of green rickshaws on the streets of India.
